Ann Arbor unveils schedule for converting 3 streets to two-way traffic

ANN ARBOR, MI – Motorists in downtown Ann Arbor used to driving only north on Ashley Street and south on First Street can expect big changes soon.

As the Downtown Development Authority’s First and Ashley improvement project wraps up, three downtown one-way streets will be converted to two-way traffic in the coming days.

The city has announced a timetable for the conversions on Ashley, First and Kingsley streets.

Ashley Street will convert to two-way traffic from Madison Street to Miller Avenue starting Monday, August 9. New yellow bands are already painted in the center of the repaved street.

The sections of Ashley north of Miller and south of Madison already allow two-way traffic.

Conversions to First and Kingsley will follow from Monday August 16.

First will convert to two-way from Madison to Kingsley, and Kingsley will convert to two-way from First to Main Street. The first south of Madison already allows two-way traffic.

The DDA has been planning two-way conversions for several years to restore a traditional road network to slow traffic movements, increase visibility and access to adjacent businesses, and strengthen access to the main street.

“Permanent signs, traffic signs and pavement markings will be in place to indicate these traffic patterns,” the city said in a press release Thursday (August 5th). “Temporary warning signage will also be in place for approximately three months to help increase awareness of the new traffic patterns. To keep everyone safe, please follow all posted signs.”

In addition to repaving streets and making other infrastructure improvements, the DDA has added a new downtown bike path along First Street as part of its First and Ashley Improvement Project. The previously incomplete northern section of the cycle path that extends to Kingsley has recently been paved. The DDA also plans to add new “advisory bike lanes” to portions of First and William Street.
